Evil Empire

Evil Empire is a new-ish studio formed in early 2019 by a few ex-Motion Twin people with the intention of creating more Dead Cells and using that as a stepping stone towards making our own games. We work in the same open space as Motion Twin and regularly beat them in Nerf wars and Smash.

The name of our studio is a dig at some of the shadier aspects of the game industry and, if you have a sense of humour, a signal that we're all about being the exact opposite (also, people didn't like my "Cat Nap Studio" suggestion - which really says something about their taste as far as I'm concerned).

If you're working at Evil Empire you will NEVER crunch (it's nuts that this has to be said), you will have excellent health cover, five weeks paid leave (plus public holidays), subsidized meals, flexibility with work time, free fruit and other noms and of course as much coffee as you can drink.

We also do regular trips to some of the most legendary gaming events in the world, including excursions to National Parks and other such shenanigans (team building right ? ), so there's plenty of opportunities for motivated people to get out and see the world. Well, at least, we were doing this before Covid happened, and plan to do it again if events are ever a thing in the future...

Bordeaux is an awesome city as it's big enough to have plenty to do, but small enough that you can walk across it in half an hour. Beautiful 19th century architecture and more restaurants than you can poke a stick at make it a great place to live. You're also 45 minutes drive from the beach and 3 hours from the ski slopes. While access to a very well connected airport and a 2 hour high speed train ride to Paris mean you're never far away from anything.

HR Manager (Head of People)

Permanent contract Bordeaux (33)

Position Duties

Evil Empire, the new team working on Motion Twin's smash hit Dead Cells, among other ambitious projects, is looking for a Human Resources Manager with experience building game dev teams and scaling as our company grows.

As we start work on new projects, alongside continued support for Dead Cells, we need to ensure that we're able to find, hire and retain the best talent in the industry. We'll need someone to work hand in hand with the leadership team to help maintain company culture (indie organisation, as little hierarchy as possible, zero tolerance for crunch and poor management).

Being a little bit crazy about video games is a must.

Your responsibilities would include :
  • Building our 20 person team out to 50 people over the short to medium term.
  • Working closely with leadership to identify strategic roles that need filling, define the job post and begin recruitment.
  • Filtering applications, organising our CV database, and shortlisting strong candidates for interviews.
  • Conducting pre-screening interviews and organising the interview process in conjunction with leadership.
  • Onboarding new team members and ensuring that they arrive in the best circumstances with all the help we can provide for relocation, administrative tasks, etc.
  • Working with our COO on administrative onboarding (contracts, health insurance etc) and ensuring that everyone has everything that they need to make games.
  • Ensuring that our salary offers remain competitive and aligned with the market, while allowing us to attract the best talent.
  • Organising and running our bi-annual interviews with team members to ensure that everyone is happy and has regular opportunities to express themselves if not.
  • Continuous feedback and check-ins with the team to make sure that we're on the right track and not developing any bad habits. Regular coffee breaks and such.
  • Organising the hiring process and ensuring the highest standard of professionalism and communication with all potential recruits.
  • Work on the public presentation of the company (website, linkedin etc) to ensure that people know who we are and what we're about.
  • Maintaining and updating our internal team tracking tools (organigrams, clickup, company policy documents etc).
  • Outside of heavy recruitment periods there would also be ample room to work with the COO on other organisational, team and office management projects, for example, trips to gaming events (come on covid vaccine ! ), team building events, the purchase of an entirely necessary and essential pool table, ahem. And lots more.

Candidate Profile

  • At least 5 years XP in HR with preference given to those who have worked in the game industry for some of this time.
  • Bilingual French/English and at ease reading, writing and speaking in both languages, that's why this job offer is in English. Language lessons provided for an exceptional candidate that's a little rusty with their English.
  • Excellent organisation and ability to identify a problem and propose a solution, without anyone telling you there was an issue to begin with.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. You'll be interacting with a diverse set of people with differing views and social profiles, you'll need to speak both artist and dev, and know how to facilitate communication between these groups.
  • Experience in business management or other professions requiring a lot of attention to detail would be a plus.

Bonus Points :
  • Pre-existing network in the video game industry... Obviously knowing who we can hire and who's available would be a major plus.

Contract :
  • 35 - 50k EUR (gross) per year, depending on experience and profile.
