Evil Empire is a studio formed in early 2019 by a few ex-Motion Twin people with the intention of creating more Dead Cells and using that as a stepping stone towards making our own games. We work in the same open space as Motion Twin and regularly beat them in Nerf wars and Smash.
The name of our studio is a dig at some of the shadier aspects of the game industry and, if you have a sense of humour, a signal that we're all about being the exact opposite (also, some people didn't like the "Cat Nap Studio" spite of it clearly being the better choice).
As we start work on incredimazing new projects, alongside continued support for Dead Cells, we need to ensure that we're working with the latest technology and bringing in a talented and experienced team capable of leading ambitious projects.
While we're currently growing rapidly, we pay a lot of attention to ensuring that we maintain small autonomous teams (10-15 people max). This not only means we work on a more "human" scale, but also that everyone can really impact the game with their ideas and initiatives.

What We Do Differently
If you're working at Evil Empire you will NEVER crunch (it's nuts that this has to be said), you will have excellent health cover, five weeks paid leave (plus public holidays), subsidized meals, flexibility with work time, free fruit and other noms and of course as much coffee as you can drink.
We also do regular trips to some of the most legendary gaming events in the world, including excursions to National Parks and other such shenanigans (team building right ? ), so there's plenty of opportunities for motivated people to get out and see the world. Well, at least, we were doing this before Covid happened, and plan to do it again if events are ever a thing in the future...
While we're an indie company, our financial stability allows us to offer the kind of work environment that we always wished we could have, so we're always scheming new ways to make our work lives enjoyable.

Comfortable Work Environment
We're always open to suggestions regarding new tech and hardware, learning resources like books, patreon subscriptions, or training and of course everyone gets to pick what goes in the junk food cupboard. So you should always have access to everything you need to be happy in the office.
In addition, Bordeaux is an awesome city as it's big enough to have plenty to do, but small enough that you can walk across it in half an hour. Beautiful 19th century architecture and more restaurants than you can poke a stick at make it a great place to live. You're also 45 minutes drive from the beach and 3 hours from the ski slopes. While access to a very well connected airport and a 2 hour high speed train ride to Paris mean you're never far away from anything.

Experienced Game Designer

Position Duties

Evil Empire is dedicated to experiment collaborative game design as a method to build better games with happier people instead of having everyone only doing what they're told to. As a Game Designer on one of our new projects, you will be a key element in making collaborative design work.

Joining an existing team, your main missions will be to :
  • Understand the existing vision, intentions, and game design of the project, and be able to communicate it to the team.
  • Understand the production constraints and be able to communicate it to the team.
  • Prepare and lead game design brainstorms with the team.
  • Work on the ideas chosen by the team, proposing a coherent and complete design.
  • Follow the team in charge of developing the design, playtest the feature as early as possible and make sure the implementation is coherent with the written intentions.
  • Help the development team by anticipating and offering solutions on how to handle corner cases and interactions with the rest of the game.
  • Write and maintain the game design documents.
  • Create documentation and presentations of our shiny new content for internal and external communication.

In addition to the above, your responsibilities would include :
  • Defining and listing the technical and artistic development needs for each new design you propose, in conjunction with team leads and producers.
  • Estimating the time needed for each design's implementation.
  • Working with the producer to assign greenlight content to the most relevant team member.
  • Working with the producer to ensure we meet deadlines and have plenty of warning when we're going to inevitably be late. Crunch prevention officer... ^^
  • Testing, testing, testing the new or already existing content, ensuring that it respects the intention behind the initial designs, reaches or exceeds the target quality level and is shipped on time.
  • Balancing all existing and future content.
  • Providing your professional perspective on the other company's project.

Candidate Profile

  • You have shipped at least 2 games.
  • You have the right mindset for collaborative design ; seeing your idea being put aside in favor of someone else idea doesn't annoy you.
  • You can easily project yourself in and work on someone else's idea.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. You'll be interacting with a diverse set of people with differing views and social profiles, you'll need to speak both artist and dev, and know how to facilitate communication between these groups.
  • Debating with you feel empowering, not tiring and meaningless
  • Critical thinking will be key. You should be someone who can't play a game, even a masterpiece, without listing what could have been done better.
  • You'll need to be bilingual French/English and at ease reading, writing and speaking in both languages, that's why this job offer is in English. Language lessons will be provided for an exceptional candidate that's a little rusty with their English.
  • You have an extensive knowledge of high quality 2D action games, particularly recent indie hits like Hollow Knight, Ori 2, Hyper Light Drifter, Hades and so on.

  • Based in our office in Bordeaux, though work from home and necessary precautions are in place during the COVID19 crisis.
